Today I Started A New Tradition . . .
At approximately 4:20am I read the last page of Victoria Christopher Murray’s rapturous novel, Harlem Rhapsody (2025). I read it down to its studs, savoring each word of dedication and acknowledgement at book’s end.
I initially mourned the blank pages that followed. It felt apocalyptic. Like the end of a world. But what began as grief soon made way for inspiration. Because blank pages are also new beginnings. I found poetry in ending the year at the end of a book, I decided to welcome 2026 by starting a new one.
the a(m)byss is a blank page, both literally and metaphorically at the moment. But in my mind this platform, more cacophony than rhapsody, is a space to plumb the depths of joy, pleasure, desire, and leisure, leaning into omnivorous and promiscuous creative appetites where curiosities peak and discovery runs free.
the a(m)byss - a play, of course, on “abyss” described in a trifold definition by Merriam-Webster as “an immeasurably deep gulf or great space,” “intellectual or moral depths,” “the bottomless gulf, pit, or chaos of the old cosmogonies,” - is a space where thoughts, feelings, ideas, and observations - deep as the rivers, as expansive as the ocean - are passionately considered, collected, and shared.
Entering the a(m)byss is like entering a multiverse. Here, art is sacred and essential to our survival. Here, we rejoice in vulnerability, setting aside pursuits of mastery and declarations of expertise. Instead, we delight in wonder, exploration, growth, evolution, and elevation.
This world is not pigeonholed by chronology, but finds joy in connecting with art that tells stories resonant across temporalities. So, if you choose, join me in this beautiful, Black a(m)byss where the sublimity of creativity reigns as we explore worlds and birth new ones.
